A PETITION TO THE MAYOR OF PHILADELPHIA TO SUPPORT INTERNATIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE

Dear Mayor Ed Rendell:

We urge you to take action to remedy a 10 year old environmental injustice. In 1988, 4,000 tons of Philadelphia municipal incinerator ash was falsely labeled as fertilizer and dumped on a beach in Haiti. The ash remains in Haiti today, threatening public health and the environment. The company involved in the dumping has agreed to contribute towards bringing the ash home, but we need your help too. Since Philadelphia never paid for the original disposal of the waste and since the City had a 1997 budget surplus of $130 million, we are asking you to contribute the remaining $200,000 needed to finally clean up Philly's mess in Haiti and score a victory for international environmental justice.
