Make a Poster About Your Global Partnership
for the National Conference of Tobacco or Health 2001

(New Orleans, Nov. 27-79)

Action of the Month
September 2001

The 2001 National Conference on Tobaccco of Health will be held in New Orleans on November 27-29. Many U.S. GPTC participants will be attending. Essential Action has scheduled an ancillary meeting 7-9 pm, TUESDAY, NOV. 27, to allow everyone to meet each other, share ideas, and provide feedback. Please put it on your calendars! We will send you a reminder and forward further info closer to the conference.

In the meantime, we would like U.S. groups and their international partners to prepare posters to be displayed at the conference. Please see below for directions and suggestions. Feel free to contact Essential Action if you have any questions.

DIRECTIONS

The purpose of this activity is to share information about your global partnerships with the larger U.S. tobacco control community. Since each global partnership is unique, there are no specific guidelines on the content of your and your partner's poster. We recommend that you focus on a joint project that you and your partner have done or are working on, but you may prefer one of the other suggestions listed below.

General Guidelines

Your and your partner's poster should:

  • be a joint project
  • be visually eye-catching and interesting to read
  • include your and your partner's organization names and state/countries

This is meant to be a fun, creative project. Your poster needn't be professional looking, but please put some time and thought into it. We recommend that you and your partner start working on it now to avoid any last-minute glitches.

For visuals you may want to include photos and examples of tobacco advertising from your respective countries. If so, collect and send them as soon as possible, as international mail can be slow! Some U.S. groups may want to send disposable cameras to their global partners to help them collect visuals. To cut down on time and costs, international groups with access to scanners may want to scan and email their examples.

Ideas for Posters

  • An activity, project, or campaign that you and your partner have done or are working on
  • Compare and contrast tobacco advertising techniques and themes in your and your partner's countries
  • Compare and contrast tobacco-related information that your two groups share a particular interest in, e.g. women and tobacco, religion and tobacco, etc.
  • A collage based on information exchanged during the "getting to know each other" phase of the partnership, e.g. photos of partners, information about the country, etc.

Miscellaneous Details

If you are attending the 2001 National Conference, please bring your and your partner's poster with you. If you would like to bring the materials and make the poster on-site, please let Essential Action know ahead of time so that we make sure to have enough posterboard onhand.

If you or your partner will not be attending, send your poster materials to Essential Action no later than FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 16. We will arrange them on posterboard and display them for you.

If you do not have a partner and would still like to participate in this project, contact Essential Action. For example, if you have not yet been matched with a U.S. partner, we can display information about your group in hopes of attracting an appropriate partner at the conference.
